It's a pretty special day when my brother John is here on a visit just to be visiting his family, so starting with yesterday when I picked him up at the Minneapolis airport through our day's activities today, it has been a time to reminisce, laugh, and share.
John is usually on his way to present a retreat or some other sort of speaking engagement and I believe next week is slated to fly to the Phillipines, but this weekend he belongs to his family and we are certainly enjoying it.
This evening my younger brother Anson will be here with the rest of his family and my oldest brother Bob will be joining us as well to make it an official "gathering of Heagles" at (where else?) Sammy's Pizza down town.
Anson and Diana are celebrating their 40th anniversary and their first date was at Sammy's pizza, so it is sacred ground with sausage and mushrooms.
It is next to never that I get a chance to cook for John, who is an excellent cook in his own right. I distinctly remember a trip out to visit him in Seattle, Washington when he prepared fresh caught Pacific salmon on the grill with an amazing dill sauce. I can't say that popovers and scrambled eggs with bacon bits comes even close to that gastric victory, but that's what we shared this morning and I got good reviews.
This afternoon we jumped in the Scion xB and took a spin over near Cornell to check out where John used to have his little lake cabin on Lake Holcombe. The heavy rains of this morning dissipated and the sun came out to put an exclamation point on the bright colors of the hardwoods all along highways 53/29 and 27.
His former cabin has been so throughly remodeled that it took some time to really understand that it was the same property.
We made a stop at the "Frayed Knot" corner store for an Olson's Dairy ice cream cone and are now back at the office preparing for a bit of a nap before the evening's festivities.
That's where I am headed now. Time to regenerate!
